NEW DELHI: A violent shooting incident in Tampa, Florida, resulted in the deaths of at least two individuals and left 18 others wounded. The altercation erupted between two groups on a bustling street filled with hundreds of revelers during Halloween festivities in the early hours of Sunday, as confirmed by authorities, reported Fox News.
The incident occurred shortly before 3 am in the vicinity of a row of bars and nightclubs located in the 1600 block of East 7th Avenue, situated within Tampa’s Ybor City neighborhood.Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw provided this information to the media on-site.
“It was a disturbance or a fight between two groups,” Bercaw said. “And in this fight between two groups, we had hundreds of innocent people involved that were in the way.”
A video shared on the internet depicts individuals in Halloween attire socializing and enjoying drinks on the street. Suddenly, gunshots can be heard, causing a panic among the crowd. In the chaos that follows, some individuals knock over metal tables and seek refuge behind them. Subsequent footage reveals law enforcement officers providing assistance to several injured individuals lying on the ground.
“They just said they had one person in custody, and I hope he’s the person,” Emmitt Wilson told Fox News Digital. Wilson said his 14-year-old son Elijah Wilson was killed in the shooting.
Wilson, whose family lives in Tampa, told reporters at the scene that his son was a “good child” who was “just at the wrong place at the wrong time.”
“I’ve been trying to tell him to stop hanging around certain people, but he haven’t been listening,” Wilson said.
A single suspect, known only as a male, voluntarily surrendered to the police, according to Bercaw. Authorities suspect that there may have been a second shooter involved in the incident.
At this time, no information regarding the medical conditions of the 18 individuals who were hospitalized with injuries has been made available.
Officials have called upon anyone with information or video footage of the shooting to get in touch with the Tampa police at 813-231-6130.
