Unfortunately, he could not participate in the Commonwealth Games due to an injury, but he made sure to cover up for that at the World Athletics Championships. He became only the second Indian and the first Indian male to win a medal at the World Athletics Championships. Neeraj also became the first Indian to win the Diamond League title in September.
