Aankhen was indeed a game-changer in the Indian film industry when it was released almost two decades ago. The film, which starred Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, and Arjun Rampal, was a huge commercial success and garnered critical acclaim for its innovative storyline and brilliant performances. On April 5, the film turned 21, and to celebrate the same, director Vipul Shah talked about his debut project in an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Hungama

Among many other aspects of the film, Vipul also commented on the killing of two vital characters, played by Paresh Rawal and Sushmita Sen. While speaking on the same note, he confessed that they wanted to redesign that part when the team saw the final output. However, they didn’t have the time to reshoot it.

Vipul asserted, “So in the play, the characters of Sushmita and Paresh were getting killed. So we were very clear that we were going to go ahead with them. But when I saw the first final cut of the film, I realized that I should not kill them. I should keep them alive. And they all walk into the sunset with the money, all five of them.”

He further added, “That was my thought then, but there was no time left for us to reshoot or redesign that part. So that’s one regret that I have that I should have not killed Paresh and Sushmita in the film.”

As the conversation progressed, we asked the renowned director to share what inspired him to convert a Gujarati play into a Hindi film. He answered, “I had no idea about what works or what doesn’t work in Hindi cinema. I had no idea about the dynamics of Hindi cinema. I just had this conviction that this is the most amazing story. And if told, well, people will connect with it. I had no other thought in my mind except the fact that I want to narrate this story in a very interesting manner. Beyond that, I had no understanding of how Hindi cinema works. So I guess sometimes not knowing the theory is a blessing.”

Besides Aankhen, Shah has also directed successful films like Namastey London, Commando, and Force, among others. He is currently gearing up to continue the Commando franchise on OTT, which is happening for the first time in the Indian entertainment industry.
