Facebook and Instagram parent company Meta has listed in a report the actions it took against bad content on both its social media platforms in May in India. The bad content is nearly 25 million in number and includes sections such as spam, adult nudity and sexual activity, hate speech, violence and incitement, among others.
In its monthly report in compliance with the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, the company said that it purged such content across 13 policies for Facebook and 12 policies for Instagram between May 1-31.
The company said it received complaints about such content via pre-established channels. These include pre-established channels for specific violations, self-remediation flows where they can download their data, avenues to address account hacked issues etc. The company also took into account the orders received from Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC).Bad content reports received for Facebook
According to Meta, Facebook received 16,995 reports through the Indian grievance mechanism, and we responded to 100% of these reports. The company provided tools for users to resolve their issues in 2,325 cases.
Of the other 14,670 reports where specialised review was needed, we reviewed content as per our policies, and we took action on 2,299 reports in total. The remaining 12,371 reports were reviewed but may not have been actioned due to the reasons explained above,” Meta added.

Bad content reports received for Instagram
On Instagram, the company received 16,267 reports through the Indian grievance mechanism from May 1-31 and responded to 100% of the reports.
“Of these incoming reports, we provided tools for users to resolve their issues in 3,828 cases,” the company said.
Of the other 12,439 reports where specialised review was needed, it took action on 2,671 reports in total. The remaining 9,768 reports were reviewed but may not have been actioned.
Social media platforms with more than 5 million users are required to publish monthly compliance reports as per the new IT Rules 2021.
