Star batter Shubman Gill reflected on his 2023 season, saying it was full of great experiences, fun, and learning. The India cricketer recalled his handwritten New Year resolutions and shared it on social media in a heartwarming post on New Year’s eve.
Shubman Gill’s evolution into one of the key members of the senior national team reached the next level in 2023. Gill’s prowess was on full display when he scored a majestic maiden ODI double-century against New Zealand in the first month of 2023, becoming the youngest to reach the milestone. Throughout the year, he accumulated an impressive 1584 runs in ODIs at an average above 60, including six centuries. In the T20I arena, Gill’s bat spoke volumes as well. He managed to score a century against Australia at home, which stood out as his only 50+ score in the format for the year.
However, it was in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 where Gill truly shone. He became the highest run-scorer of the season, amassing a staggering 890 runs and securing the prestigious Orange Cap. His three centuries during the tournament, including a high score of 129, were crucial in his quest for the cap. By achieving this, he joined an elite group of batters who have scored over 800 runs in a single IPL season, second only to Virat Kohli’s record-breaking 973 runs in 2016.
Gill, in his post highlighted the heartbreaks of the ODI World Cup and the Boxing Day Test in South Africa. The young opener was out for the first two matches of the World Cup due to dengue and upon return, the youngster struggled for consistency. Gill’s Test numbers were far from impressive, but the batter seems to be learning from every setback.
“With 2023 coming to an end, the year has been full of experiences, some great fun and other great learnings. The end of the year didn’t go as planned, but I can proudly say we came ever so close to our goals, giving everything we had. The coming year brings its own challenges and opportunities.
“Hopefully, we’ll get closer to our goals in 2024. I hope all of you find love, joy, and strength in everything you do,” Gill wrote in his post.
THE TO-DO LIST FOR 2023
It was interesting to see Gill’s to-do list for 2023. In his handwritten note, Gill wanted to score the most hundreds for India in 2023, win the Orange Cap and win the World Cup trophy with his team.
“Make my family happy” and “Be less hard on myself” were the other personal goals for Gill.
In fact, Gill finished the year with 7 hundreds, only one fewer than Kohli, and went on to win the Orange Cap.
Gill will be in action in the New Year’s Test as India look to begin 2024 on a high and avoid a series defeat in South Africa. The two teams will meet in Cape Town from January 3.
