Zomato, Swiggy, and Blinkit significantly increased orders during the New Year celebrations. Deepinder Goyal, CEO of Zomato, announced on his X.com (formerly Twitter) that the platform had achieved the highest daily deliveries. Swiggy had more than one million active users on the app every hour, delivering more orders per minute than any other day. Swiggy’s CEO, Rohit Kapoor, said the New Year event had seen 1.6 times more orders than the Cricket World Cup Final between India and Australia on November 19, 2023.
Zomato has also experienced a significant spike in orders since Christmas, with the platform delivering over 140 orders per second. Interestingly, Biryani was one of the most ordered food items on Zomato across India.
According to Goyal’s post, Zomato delivered more orders during the 2023 New Year celebrations than orders made during NYE of 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 combined. These statistics reflect the platform’s success and the changing habits of Indian users when it comes to using delivery apps for festive celebrations. He added that Zomato users tipped over Rs. 98 lakhs to delivery partners in just one day and thanked them for their gesture.
The quick-commerce and food-delivery platforms reported a surge in orders on New Year’s Eve, with delivery workers, cloud kitchens, and restaurants also prepared for increased customer activity. Zepto, for instance, was on track to receive over three times as many orders as December 31, 2022, and about 15% to 20% higher than its last best day – the cricket World Cup final, according to co-founder and chief executive Aadit Palicha.
Both Swiggy and Zomato experienced a surge in food orders during a recent event. According to Zomato’s CEO, Deepinder Goyal, the number of app openings on that day surpassed even Christmas Day.
Similarly, Blinkit and Zepto reported an increase in sales of chips and beverages during the event. Zepto saw a 35% rise in chip sales compared to the previous week, and soft drink sales also increased. The company expected to sell more than 600,000 units of chips and soft drinks during the event.
