Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 17 series in 2025, yet the rumours about the lineup are already making rounds of the internet. The latest rumours suggest that the Cupertino-based tech giant may upgrade the front-facing camera in the iPhone 17 lineup. According to a report by Medium, Apple analyst Ming Chi Kuo has claimed that the iPhone 17 lineup is expected to feature a 24MP selfie camera.
For comparison, the iPhone 14 and the latest iPhone 15 features a 12MP front-facing camera with five plastic lens elements. The iPhone 16 lineup is also expected to feature the same hardware. However, with the ‌iPhone‌ 17, Apple is likely to upgrade the hardware to a 24MP camera with a six-element lens. Kuo claims that the upgrade will improve the image quality of the front-facing camera significantly.
How this will improve the quality of selfies in iPhone 17
The upgraded 24MP sensor is expected to offer greater detail and clarity in images taken with the front facing camera of iPhone 17. With a higher resolution, photos will also be able to maintain their quality even when cropped or zoomed in. This will also offer users more flexibility in post-processing. Moreover, the larger number of pixels will be able to capture finer details, which will make the images look sharper and more vibrant.

Also, the upgrade to a six-element lens is also expected to enhance the image quality. Each element can be designed to correct different aberrations and distortions. This will lead to clearer and more accurate photos. The additional elements are also expected to improve the efficiency of light transmission to the sensor, which will enhance low-light performance of the smartphone.
It is also important to note that the ‌iPhone‌ 17 Pro may even be the first ‌‌iPhone‌‌ to feature under-panel Face ID technology. This will not only reduce the size of the Dynamic Island, but will also keep the circular cutout for the front-facing camera.
The ‌iPhone‌ 17 Pro is also rumoured to be Apple’s last premium smartphone model to include a circular cutout for the front-facing camera. Apple is also expected to adopt under-display cameras in 2027’s “Pro” ‌‌iPhone‌‌ models to offer a true “all-screen” look.
