One of the ways that Google is changing its working in the EU region is by changing the way Search results are displayed.Google will expand testing on alterations to the search results page, which include the introduction of dedicated units featuring links to comparison sites and query shortcuts for refining searches.
Specific categories, like hotels, will witness a dedicated space for comparison sites and direct suppliers, offering more detailed results, including images and star ratings. Notably, these changes will lead to the removal of certain features, such as the Google Flights unit.
Choice screens for Android users
Under the DMA, Google and other designated companies will implement additional choice screens for Android users. These screens will provide users with the option to easily switch their default search engine or browser. Such screens may be encountered during device setup on Android phones and within the Chrome app on desktop and iOS devices.
Additional consents for linked services
Another notable adjustment involves the introduction of additional consents for linked services. Currently, Google shares data across various products and services for specific purposes, such as personalising content and ads based on user settings.
In the next few weeks, European users will see a new consent banner, seeking permission for certain services to continue sharing data for these purposes. Users will have the flexibility to alter their choices at any time within their Google Account settings.
Data portability initiatives
Google is also planning to test a Data Portability API for developers. This initiative aims to facilitate transfer of user data to third-party apps or services.
