Clarifying on the issue of deactivation of Aadhaar cards, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has said that no Aadhaar numbers have been cancelled. It added that as a part of keeping the Aadhaar database updated, intimations are issued to Aadhaar number holders from time to time.
“In the course of activities undertaken to keep the Aadhaar database updated, intimations are issued from time to time to Aadhaar number holders.In this connection, it is clarified that no Aadhaar number has been cancelled,” UIDAI said.
As per a report by news agency PTI, in case any Aadhaar number holder has any grievance, they can submit their feedback to UIDAI.
“In case any Aadhaar number holder has any grievance in this regard, they may submit their feedback to UIDAI at this link https://uidai.gov.in/en/contact-support/feedback.html. Any such grievance will be duly addressed,” it said.
Aadhaar is the most commonly used digital identity and is being used to avail of several government-provided benefits, including subsidies.
‘Aadhaar deactivation due to technical error’
In a press conference, Union Minister Shantanu Thakur said that Aadhaar cards are being deactivated due to a technical error and all such cards will be reactivated in the next few days. He said that those who have faced problems have been asked to apply for the reactivation of the cards.
The issue gained prominence after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged that the BJP-led central government “deactivated” Aadhaar cards of people in the state ahead of the Lok Sabha polls to stop them from availing of the benefits of various social welfare schemes.
She alleged that Aadhaar cards of 50 people at Jamalpur in Purba Bardhaman district and several others in Birbhum, North and South 24 Parganas as well as in North Bengal have been “delinked”. She added that her government will continue with the state-run welfare programmes irrespective of the beneficiaries not having an Aadhaar card.
