NEW DELHI: In Chicago, a group of self-described anti-war activists reacted with cheers upon hearing news of Iran’s missile and drone attack on Israel. This event occurred during a meeting of the groups March On DNC 2024 and Anti War Chicago.
A spokesperson announced that Iran had retaliated against Israel for an airstrike on an Iranian official in Syria, declaring, “Twelve days ago, Israel brazenly hit an Iranian embassy compound in Syria, violating international law again … and Iran has just responded about 30 minutes ago. They’ve sent, and this is from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard directly, they’ve sent drones and missiles against specific targets in occupied Palestine, Israeli targets in occupied Palestine.”
As per a Fox News report, the announcement was met with applause and cheers from the attendees. Additional reports indicated that drones were also launched from Yemen and Iraq targeting Israel, further igniting the crowd’s enthusiasm.
The speaker emphasized the need for action, saying, “This country and the world needs us,” and expressed concern over the US potentially defending Israel, which was met with boos from the audience.
Iran targeted Israeli territory with over 300 missiles and drones on Saturday night, which were predominantly intercepted by Israel and its allies, according to military reports.
This aggressive act raised concerns about a potential full-scale conflict between Israel and Iran, although the confrontation led to no fatalities, with 12 individuals sustaining injuries.
Following a “situational assessment,” the military issued a statement early Monday saying, “it was decided to restore educational activities across Israel”.
The assault by Tehran on Saturday was a response to a previous airstrike — generally believed to have been conducted by Israel — that devastated an Iranian consular facility in Damascus, resulting in the deaths of seven Revolutionary Guards, including two generals.
