NEW DELHI: On a batting rampage this Indian Premier League season, unstoppable Sunrisers Hyderabad have already broken the record for highest total in league’s history twice.
When the franchise posted a mammoth 277 for 3 against Mumbai Indians last month, everyone expected the record to stay for a while.
But on Monday, Sunrisers produced another epic performance with the bat, bettering that by making 287 for 3 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Chinnaswamy.
The platform for the new highest total was laid by SRH opener Travis Head (102 off 41), who fired the fourth fastest ton of the league, off just 39 balls. To go with that in-form South African Heinrich Klaasen also struck a breezy 31-ball 67.
The Australian, Head, after his incredible hundred, said that the franchise now have their eyes set on crossing the 300-run mark.
“(Our total) needs a three in front of it, does it now?” Head said at the end of the Hyderabad innings on Monday.
“We’ve got guys like Klaasen, (Abdul) Samad and Nitish (Kumar Reddy)… We’ve got some power through the middle, and we want to keep just putting the foot down as much as we can.
“We know that’s not always guaranteed, but at the moment I think we’re setting it up really well in each game and getting to the score that we need.”
In the history of T20 cricket, 300-plus total have only been achieved once when Nepal put up a mammoth 314 for 3 against Mongolia during the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games.
SRH’s 287 for 3 is now the second highest ever total in all of T20 cricket combined — internationals and franchise cricket.
Afghanistan hold the record of third highest total ever, when they notched up 278 for three against Ireland in an international fixture.
Former champions Hyderabad are now fourth in the points table following their fourth win in six matches.
