Amazon has laid off a small number of staffers, reportedly 80, from its Pharmacy business. The company said it made the decision to adjust resources and some roles were eliminated from the team.
CNBC reported that Amazon confirmed the layoffs in the Amazon Pharmacy Services team. About 80 employees were laid off, the publication cited another new website Semafora.
“Like many businesses, we are always improving our processes, for both quality and efficiency, and identifying how we can deliver on the best customer experience,” Amazon spokesperson Brad Glasser said.
“As a result, we have made the decision to adjust resources and a small number of roles have been eliminated on the Amazon Pharmacy Services team,” Glasser added.
The Amazon Pharmacy division was launched in 2020 and it was hit with job cuts earlier in the year. Previously, the job cuts have also impacted employees working on digital health tools and the Halo health and fitness trackers, CNBC said.
Amazon acquired PillPack in 201, later introduced a telehealth service called Amazon Care, and last year, announced its acquisition of health care provider One Medical for $3.9 billion.
Previous job cuts at Amazon
Amazon laid off 18,000 employees over several months in the first round and then it announced an additional 9,000 job cuts in March. The e-commerce giant has let go a total of 27,000 employees – the largest layoffs in its 29-year history.
In May this year, it was also reported that Amazon laid off about 500 employees in India across different businesses and functions, including Amazon Web Services (AWS), human resources and support functions.
Earlier this year, CEO Andy Jassy said that the decision was made to streamline costs. The layoffs affected staffers in the company’s retail, devices, recruiting and human resources, cloud computing, advertising and Twitch livestreaming businesses.
