According to IDC, some of the contributing factors to the decline are weak demand, excess inventory, and a worsening macroeconomic climate. In Q1 2023, global shipments numbered 56.9 million, which was a 29% decline compared to the same quarter in 2022.
All brands see a decline in sales
Lenovo continues to lead the market with 22.4% market share and 12.7 million shipments. HP and Dell secured second and third spot respectively with 21.1% and 16.7% market share. Apple had a 7.2% market share whereas Asus had a 6.8% share.
However, in terms of shipments, every brand saw a steep decline with Apple leading the charts. Compared to Q1, 2022, Apple saw its shipments decline by 40%. Lenovo, Asus and Dell saw their shipments decline by close to 31% each. Dell’s shipments also declined by 24.2%.
IDC pegs the market to see more decline. “PC shipments will likely suffer in the near term with a return to growth towards the end of the year with an expected improvement in the global economy and as the installed base begins to think about upgrading to Windows 11,” noted the report by IDC.
“By 2024, an ageing installed base will start coming up for refresh,” said Linn Huang, research vice president, devices and displays at IDC. “If the economy is trending upwards by then, we expect significant market upside as consumers look to refresh, schools seek to replace worn down Chromebooks, and businesses move to Windows 11. If recession in key markets drags on into next year, recovery could be a slog,” he added.
