Soon after the anticipated announcement of new iPhones in September, Apple may unveil new Macs with the new M3 chip the following month, in October.
In his weekly newsletter, Power On, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg speculates that Apple will bring the new batch of Macs in October, a month after the company is expected to unveil the iPhone 15 series. These new Macs would come with the next-generation M3 chip.
Gurman says that there would be new MacBooks – a new 13-inch MacBook Air and a 13-inch MacBook Pro – both powered by the yet-to-be-announced M3 chip.
There is not much new to expect for the 13-inch MacBook Air coming later this year, as it already received a design refresh last year, apart from the new chip. While the 13-inch MacBook Pro is also in for a hardware refresh, there is no word if it will also get a look makeover.
The third new Mac expected to arrive this October, according to Gurman, could be a M3-powered iMac, which we last saw on the stage more than two years ago, donning a new colourful avatar and first-gen Apple Silicon.
It’s possible that the upcoming iMac might not have any changes to the form factor. According to Gurman’s Power On last week, the larger iMacs, possibly including a 32-inch model, are not expected until late 2024.
There is also an M3-powered iPad Pro and iPad Air on the cards, but the two might not come until next year, according to Gurman.
Apple has been testing the M3 chips for a while now. The M3 chip is expected to use a 3nm process, improving performance and power efficiency from the 5nm process used for the current-generation chips. Eventually, M3 Pro and M3 Max chips will power the likes of MacBook Pros, Mac Studio, and other machines from the Pro lineup.
