Earlier this year, Apple unveiled its first-ever mixed-reality headset, or as it prefers to call it, a spatial computer dubbed Vision Pro. The ‘Pro’ in the name suggests there may be a standard version, too, and even Mark Gurman of Bloomberg suggests the same.
In the latest edition of his newsletter, Power On, Gurman reiterates that Apple is working on a cheaper mixed-reality headset, and it could drop a few key features of the costlier Vision Pro to bring the price down. But it may still not be that cheap. Gurman says that Apple has been discussing the price of the ‘affordable’ headset in between $1,500 to $2,500.
iPhone chip for affordable headset
To bring the price down, Apple is considering some compromises. One of the biggest of them could be a less powerful A-series chip that powers the iPhone instead of an M-series chip that powers the Vision Pro and the range of Macs and iPads.
Then, this affordable headset would have lower-resolution displays. The Vision Pro has two displays, each having about 23 million pixels. Not just that, but Apple could also remove the “EyeSight” feature, which shows the user’s eyes on an external display. And there could be fewer sensors and cameras to keep a check on the costs.
While the price tag of $1500-$2500 is certainly not cheap, it will be relatively more affordable than the $3,500 Vision Pro, which goes on sale early next year. And that is just the price of the headset, the accessories, like the extra headband and the Zeiss prescription lenses, are going to add up.
Second-generation Vision Pro is already under development
Aside from the cheaper headset, Apple is also said to have begun the work on the second-generation Vision Pro, and there are two versions currently under development. The first version will be a cheaper model and will use lens inserts from Zeiss, while the second-generation version will have all the features of the full-fledged Vision Pro but will be smaller and lighter to make it more comfortable to wear and will have prescription lenses integrated.
