Apple is expected to launch new models of iPad Pro, iPad and MacBook Air sometime in March or April. Now, a new report claims that the upcoming iPad Pro models will bring a new version of the Face ID security feature. According to a report by MacRumors, a code discovered in iOS 17.4 reveals that the upcoming iPad Pro is expected to include a landscape Face ID camera.
The code reads: “During ‌Face ID‌ setup, iPad needs to be in the landscape with the camera at the top of the screen.”
Apple relocated the front-facing camera to the side of the device with the 10th-generation ‘entry-level’ iPad. This change will allow users to unlock their devices in landscape mode rather than portrait mode. The report suggests that Apple may be making this change with upcoming iPads as well.

Face ID on iPad

Currently, iPad Pro is the only tablet model from the company that supports the Face ID feature. This new code suggests that Apple may relocate the front-facing camera from the top of the iPad Pro to its side.

The report suggests that Apple may also add ‌Face ID‌ to the iPad Air models. So, the company may change the camera position on these models as well
Apple has positioned the ‌iPad Pro‌ as an alternative to the Mac for a long time. As a Mac replacement, it is often used in a horizontal orientation rather than in the vertical mode. The report claims that this might be the reason for the company to relocate the camera.

Apple’s product roadmap for 2024: What to expect

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman claimed that “Apple is aiming to release fresh iPad Airs, including a larger model, revamped iPad Pros and M3 MacBook Airs in the spring.”
Gurman added that after launching the new iPad models, Apple will focus on AI. He said: “After that, the attention will shift to its developers conference in June.” At this event the company is expected to unveil new generative AI features across Siri and iOS 18.
