Australia batter Steve Smith opening the innings after the retirement of David Warner augurs well for all-rounder Cameron Green, feels former Australia cricketer Simon Katich. Speaking during the third day of the Sydney Test match, Katich said that Smith surely had the capability to thrive as an opener having played at No. 3 for Australia in Test cricket.
“When you look at Steve Smith’s Test career and his numbers, he’s thrived at number three and fourâæ averaging over 60 in both spots,” Katich said on SEN Breakfast.
“If Steve Smith sees this as a challenge that he wants to take on, I’ve got no problem with that,” he further added.
Smith has already revealed he is fine with shifting up the order if his team needs him in this position. The batter did not have an excellent 2023, but still scored hundreds against India and England.
“He’s probably not in the best formâæ but we know with great players, they’ll find a way,” Katich said.
The former batter said that Smith moving up the order would allow Cameron Green to play in the Test line-up. Green, one of Australia’s brightest youngsters currently sits outside of the playing XI due to the presence of Mitchell Marsh, who has been in fantastic form.
“If it means someone like Cameron Green gets back into the teamâæ it allows them to reshuffle,” Katich said.
The Australian team are currently leading their series against Pakistan 2-0 and would hope to make it 3-0 in David Warner’s farewell Test match. After the series against Pakistan, Australia will get a lot of time to ponder about the new line-up. Australia will host India for a 5-match Test series in November 2024.
