Baldur’s Gate 3, the winner of this year’s edition of The Game Awards, is not coming to the Xbox Game Pass subscription.
In an interview with IGN, Swen Vincke, the founder of Larian Studios and the developer of the Baldur’s Gate series, explained that they had always planned for it to be that way and that Xbox had not attempted to pay the studio to have the game added to the service.
Vincke stated that the studio had no intention of adding the title to Game Pass right from the beginning. “Oh, we always said from the get-go, it was not going to be on Game Pass, it is not going to be on Game Pass,” said Vincke when asked if Microsoft had attempted to pay the studio for Baldur’s Gate 3 to be included on the service.
Vincke says Baldur’s Gate 3 is a “big game” available for a “fair price.” He added that “you get what you pay for,” touting the title’s lack of microtransactions and its complete story. Vincke suggests that players who pay full price for Baldur’s Gate 3 will allow the developer to continue making other games.
“We made a big game, so I think there’s a fair price to be paid for that, and I think that that is okay. We don’t charge you any micro-transactions on top of it, so you get what you pay for. Upfront it’s a big meaty game. So I think that should be able to exist as it is. This is what allows us to continue making other games,” Vincke added further.
The main story of Baldur’s Gate 3 is 60 hours long.
Baldur’s Gate 3 came out first on PS5, then on Xbox. The developer blamed Microsoft’s console for the delay, saying that it had to spend time optimising for the “weakest current-gen console.” The game had to be feature-parity on both Xbox Series X and S, so Larian Studios had to skip split-screen co-op on Xbox Series S.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is available on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S. Baldur’s Gate 3 is priced at Rs 2,999, Rs 5,827, Rs 3,799, for the standard edition on PC, PS5, and Xbox, respectively
