Beeper is not giving up; it has come up with a “fix” for its broken “iMessage for Android” app, Beeper Mini. The update to the app should let users send iMessage from their Android phones. But there is a catch. This fix requires users to have access to a Mac computer or one can also make do if they have a friend with one.
Why does the Beeper Mini app, which claimed to have reverse-engineered iMessage, now require a Mac? The company has stated that the app needs registration data to be sent from an authentic Mac, and they have been doing this using their fleet of Macs.
However, Apple took notice of the app and ‘fixed’ the issue that made it possible, causing the app to be down for several days. So, the company is now planning to have the users themselves use their Macs for this registration process, in the hope that maybe Apple does not shut them down again.
“When you connect iMessage on Beeper, we need to send identification information called ‘registration data’ from a real Mac. We have, up until now, been using our own fleet of Mac servers to provide this. Unfortunately, this has proven to be an easy target for Apple because thousands of Beeper users were using the same registration data,” the company posted on Reddit.
The update will first be released for Beeper Cloud.
This method will allow the app to generate “unique” registration data. The registration data will be periodically regenerated, once per week or month, requiring the user to turn on their Mac regularly to refresh the data. According to the company, the new system creates a 1:1 mapping of registration data to individual users, making the connection between the app and the user “very reliable.”
The registration data generated on the Mac app will also work with Beeper Mini, the standalone ‘iMessage for Android’ app from the company.
If the user does not have a Mac, they can still use the app by asking a friend to use their Mac for registration. According to the company, 10-20 iMessage users can safely use the same registration data.
Also, the users need an Apple ID and still cannot use their phone number for registration.
Apple cut down the Beeper Mini only a week after its release on the Play Store. The company said the app used fake credentials to gain access to iMessage, which it blocked. As a result, the users were unable to send or receive texts through the app.
Since then, Apple has received criticism for its move, with US lawmakers even pushing the DoJ to open an investigation into Apple for its “potentially anticompetitive conduct” in trying to disable Beeper’s services.
