Driven by chatbots like OpenAI‘s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard, 2023 saw the surge of generative AI. While accessing ChatGPT on Android was limited to its app, a potential shift looms. Code within the latest version of ChatGPT’s Android app reportedly hints at it becoming Android’s default assistant. This change could challenge Google‘s long-reigning Assistant on Android.
How ChatGPT may replace Google Assistant on Android
According to a report by Android Authority, the latest ChatGPT app (version 1.2023.352) holds clues of replacing Google Assistant on Android:

  • “com.openai.voice.assistant.AssistantActivity”: This code string, which is currently disabled, points towards voice assistant functionality.
  • “assistant_interaction_service” XML file: This code signifies intent to become a default assistant app, with tags outlining required session and recognition services.
  • Missing Manifest declarations: While the assistant service framework is present, ChatGPT app lacks crucial declarations in its Manifest to fully integrate with Android’s assistant system.

ChatGPT may face difficulties to replace Google Assistant
Despite these promising hints, OpenAI may face some challenges to replace Google Assistant with ChatGPT:

  • Incomplete functionality: The report claims that the assistant activity crashes upon activation. This suggests that the feature is still under development.
  • Limited hotword control: ChatGPT might not be able to respond to custom hotwords due to restrictions on privileged APIs, the report adds.

However, OpenAI seems determined to bridge the gap as the latest app reveals a planned Quick Settings tile for easy access. However, to replace Google Assistant with ChatGPT on Android, users may require a ChatGPT Plus subscription.
Google’s plans for Assistant with Bard
With Google gearing up to launch Assistant with Bard, OpenAI wants to ensure ChatGPT remains accessible and appealing. Making it the default assistant and offering convenient access methods like Quick Settings are strategic moves in this AI battleground.

ChatGPT’s Android ambitions are evident, but technical hurdles and Google’s Bard competitor create an intriguing dynamic. Whether ChatGPT dethrones Google Assistant remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the competition will only benefit users by pushing the boundaries of AI assistance on Android.
