OpenAI, the company that developed the ChatGPT chatbot, is already facing heat from several publishers for allegedly using their data to train its large language models (LLMs). Now, X Platforms CEO Elon Musk has reportedly filed a lawsuit against the company for deviating from its original mission to develop AI tools for humanity’s benefit to rake in profits for Microsoft.
According to reports, the legal action targets OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and president Gregory Brockman. It notes that the duo, along with Musk created the company as an open-source entity dedicated to developing AI technology for the greater good but it shifted towards profit-seeking ventures, violating the terms of the original agreement.
“OpenAI, Inc. has been transformed into a closed-source de facto subsidiary of the largest technology company in the world: Microsoft. Under its new board, it is not just developing but is actually refining an AGI to maximise profits for Microsoft, rather than for the benefit of humanity,” Musk, who is also the CEO of AI company xAI, said in the lawsuit.
Microsoft stands to make a fortune
The lawsuit also claims that with OpenAI’s style of working, Microsoft stands to make a fortune.
“The internal details of GPT-4 are known only to OpenAI and, on information and belief, to Microsoft. GPT-4 is hence the opposite of ‘open AI,'” Musk claims in the suit.
“And it is closed for proprietary commercial reasons: Microsoft stands to make a fortune selling GPT-4 to the public, which would not be possible if OpenAI—as it is required to do—makes the technology freely available to the public,” the lawsuit reads.
“Contrary to the Founding Agreement, Defendants have chosen to use GPT-4 not for the benefit of humanity, but as proprietary technology to maximise profits for literally the largest company in the world,” Musk said in the lawsuit.
OpenAI is also accused of replacing a “carefully crafted non-profit structure” with a “purely profit-driven CEO and a Board with inferior technical expertise in AGI and AI public policy.” It also highlighted that the board now has an observer seat reserved solely for Microsoft.
