Filmmaker Abir Sengupta is currently busy editing his upcoming directorial venture, Risky Romeo, featuring Sunny Singh and Kriti Kharbanda. This project marks his second directorial endeavour following the 2020 release of Indoo Ki Jawani, starring Kiara Advani. However, Indoo Ki Jawani failed to make a mark at the box office.

EXCLUSIVE: Abir Sengupta discusses filming Risky Romeo post Indoo Ki Jawani: “There are many films which don’t perform well”

In a recent conversation with Bollywood Hungama, Sengupta addressed the under-performance of Indoo Ki Jawani at the box office, shedding light on whether it influenced his approach to Risky Romeo. “I don’t care much because there are many films which don’t perform well,” Abir remarked.

“For example, Mera Naam Joker did not perform at the box office, and even Andaz Apna Apna did not perform at the box office. But nowadays, in today’s scenario, we see these films on television and we talk about them,” Abir said.  Explaining his take further, the filmmaker added, “It has everything to do with the honesty in the effort that you’re putting in while making a film by telling a story. If you are honest about making the film the way you want it to make the film, it is irrespective of how people will take it or not.”

When questioned about the audience’s reception of his films, he highlighted the unpredictability of audience reactions. Recalling an incident from his early days as a filmmaker, he shared, “There was an incident that happened to me when I made my first film, which was a Bengali film. And I was standing outside the theatres and people were walking out after watching the movie. And the gentleman who recognized me as a director of the film, and he just came to me and he told me that you know, I’m so happy you made this film. And I really liked the film and it’s such a great take on schizophrenia and he walked away, and I wondered that there was no schizophrenic patient in the film.”

Coming back to Risky Romeo, besides directing, Abir is also producing the film with Anushree Mehta under their banner Jaadugar Films in association with Priyanka Mehrotra and Rameshchandra Yadav of PR Motion Pictures.
