2023 was a significant year for Bollywood in many ways and one of the reasons was that it saw the birth of the Buy One Get One (BOGO) ticket-free offer. Zara Hatke Zara Bachke was the first film to implement the offer. It caught the attention and resulted in healthy ticket sales. Soon, many other films also followed suit like Ghoomer, Dream Girl 2, The Vaccine War, Sajini Shinde Ka Viral Video, Yaariyan 2, Mission Raniganj, Dono, etc. Jawan and Gadar 2’s makers also came up with the scheme but during the end of its run. In 2024, too, many films gave this offer to the patrons like Merry Christmas, Teri Baaton Mein Uljha Jiya, Yodha, Madgaon Express, Swantantrya Veer Savarkar and the recently released flick, Dukaan. The industry is divided over this offer. Many feel that it’s a dangerous practice and shouldn’t be encouraged.

Bollywood Hungama recently interviewed veteran producer Boney Kapoor, whose much-awaited film Maidaan is all set to release next week. We asked him his views on the Buy One Get One ticket scheme. The veteran producer replied, “It all depends on the merits of the film. If you are not sure or if you feel the film is on a weak wicket, then you come up with these kinds of schemes in the initial days of the release.”

Boney continued, “I can understand this offer being implemented in the fourth or fifth week. But when you offer one ticket free on every ticket from day 1 or day 2, it shows that the producer doesn’t have faith in the film.”

Maidaan is a period sports flick directed by Amit R Sharma of Badhaai Ho (2018) fame and produced by Boney Kapoor, Akash Chawla, Arunava Joy Sengupta and Zee Studios. It stars Ajay Devgn, Priyamani and Gajraj Rao and is based on the golden era of Indian football, between 1952 and 1962. Ajay plays Syed Abdul Rahim, an accomplished Indian coach in this film, which has music by A R Rahman.
