Foxconn and Pegatron have reportedly halted production of Apple iPhones at their factories near Chennai in southern India due to heavy rains. According to a report by news agency Reuters, the Taiwan-based original equipment makers have suspended the production due to Cyclone Michaung. The report quotes four sources close to the matter.
Foxconn, which is said to employ about 35,000 people at its Tamil Nadu iPhone factory, has yet to decide whether to resume production, as per sources. In the past two years, the iPhone maker has rapidly expanded its presence in India by investing in manufacturing locations in the south of the country as Apple looks to shift some production away from China.
This is reportedly the second time in recent months that Pegatron has been forced to shut its factory, having temporarily halted assembly of iPhones after a fire in September.
Cyclone Michaung: Chennai airport closed
Cyclonic storm ‘Michaung’ intensified to a severe cyclonic storm at 8:30 a.m. today (November 3), about 90 km east-northeast of Chennai. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall on December 4 and 5 in north-coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
The Chennai airfield is to remain closed until 9 am tomorrow. “Airfield closed for arrival and departure operations till 0900 hrs IST tomorrow due to adverse weather conditions”, said the Chennai airport authority in a post on ‘X’.
Subways have been closed due to the severe waterlogging in Chennai. Also, traffic has been closed from Manjambakkam to Vadaperumbakkam Road due to the release of water from Puzhal Lake, said the police.
“DDRT Teams are available in all vulnerable areas and they are working in coordination with the GCC and Highways Department,” it added.
