NEW DELHI: The FBI is currently investigating the tragic collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, with a focus on the circumstances leading up to it and determining if all federal laws were adhered, as per Associated Press reports .
The investigation, which is being conducted on the cargo ship Dali, was revealed by an unnamed source who spoke to AP on the condition of anonymity.
The FBI confirmed its presence on the ship for court-authorized law enforcement activities in a statement on Monday. The bridge collapse occurred when the container ship Dali, en route to Sri Lanka, collided with one of the bridge’s support columns, resulting in the bridge falling into the Patapsco River and causing the deaths of six roadwork crew members.
So far, three bodies have been recovered from the wreckage, while the search continues for the remaining three victims. National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy said that the investigation is honing in on the ship’s electrical power system, particularly after it veered off course due to power issues moments before the collision. Video evidence shows the ship’s lights flickering, indicating possible power disruptions.
Homendy said information gleaned from the vessel’s voyage data recorder is relatively basic, “so that information in the engine room will help us tremendously.”
