Garmin has announced that the ECG (Electrocardiogram) feature is now available for Garmin Fenix 7 Pro, Garmin Epix Pro, Garmin Tactix 7 AMOLED, and Garmin Venu 3/3S units/series. These four watches feature the company’s proprietary ELEVATE V5 optical heart rate sensor package which is capable of ECG. Previously, only the Garmin Venu 2 Plus had the ECG feature.
Garmin’s ECG feature can check whether you have a normal sinus rhythm or an Afib condition. Unlike some other smartwatches, it is an on-demand process that you can request whenever you need it, instead of a 24×7 background process.
The new Elevate v5 heart rate monitor found in these Garmin models allows for electrocardiogram functionality. By taking 30-second heart rhythm readings, you can store your data in the Garmin Connect app for later use.
After running a 30-second test, it will show you the result and let you export a full report in PDF format to share with your doctor. However, it is important to note that this feature cannot detect heart attacks.
The Venu 2 Plus has the same features as before, but the optical HR sensor package used has been changed by Garmin. As a result, certain portions of the FDA certification related to the ECG feature had to be redone or refilled.
Garmin, as well as other companies such as Apple, Samsung, Fitbit, and Google, have all undergone the formal FDA certification process that classifies the ECG app as a medical device. This involves conducting a complete study of over 600 participants and meeting all other requirements necessary for proper medical device certification.
It’s important to note that the clinically-validated ECG app is currently only available to buyers in America.
How to enable ECG on Garmin watches
To enable ECG functionality on your Garmin watch, you need to physically be in the United States during the initial setup, have one of the compatible watches, and update your Garmin watch and app firmware. Once you activate the ECG functionality on your watch, you can use it anywhere in the world without any issues.
