While the number may not in hundreds or thousands this time, Google has decided to cut a few more jobs. According to a report by CNBC, the tech giant has laid off around 40 people from the Google News division. Google confirmed the cuts to CNBC but didn’t really comment on the actual numbers.
“We’re deeply committed to a vibrant information ecosystem, and news is a part of that long-term investment,” the spokesperson said. “We’ve made some internal changes to streamline our organisation. A small number of employees were impacted. We’re supporting everyone with a transition period, outplacement services and severance as they look for new opportunities at Google and beyond.”

Third ‘round’ of layoffs

In 2023, this is the third time Google has announced that it is laying off people. In January, the company revealed that it will cull thousand of jobs and around 12,000 people were let go. Last month, Google sacked hundreds of employees from its recruitment division. “We continue to invest in top engineering and technical talent while also meaningfully slowing the pace of our overall hiring,” a Google spokesperson said at that time. “In line with this, the volume of requests for our recruiters has gone down. In order to continue our important work to ensure we operate efficiently, we’ve made the hard decision to reduce the size of our recruiting team.”
There seems to be no or little respite for the tech industry employees as job cuts have become par for the course in 2023. Almost every big tech company has laid off employees. Be it Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, Intel — all these companies have fired thousands of employees. Even startups and unicorn startups have been laying off employees.
Earlier this week, Microsoft-owned LinkedIn announced that it has laid off close to 600 employees. Microsoft had laid off 10,000 employees earlier this year.
