One of the legal battles that Google is fighting in the US is related to the premium the company charges from app developers. Fortnite maker Epic Games filed a case accusing the company of stifling competition. On Tuesday (November 14), the case saw Google CEOSundar Pichai’s testimony in the case. The company’s top executive highlighted why it doesn’t allow sideloading apps on Android phones.
“We don’t want to allow you to completely compromise your phone. It can install malware on your phone… it can really compromise your safety, very significantly,” Pichai said.
Pichai also drew an analogy comparing Play Store protections to the safety features in a car.
“It’s like a seatbelt in a car, we are adding the protections so you can use it safely,” he added.
Play Store vs App Store
Google has been maintaining that its policies help it better compete with Apple. It also maintained that Apple only allows users to install apps only via the App Store. Google, however, allows users to sideload apps but it does warn users against it.
“We’re trying to strike a balance. Apple’s iPhone only allows the App Store, but we believe in choice, so on Android we allow you to sideload and install additional applications,” Pichai added.
He also said that Android innovations help the company compete with Apple.
“Android was the first to design larger phones, now it’s the first to design foldable phones… all these innovations help attract developers to it,” Pichai said, adding that Google has “made it [Android] rich for developers to write applications.”

Pichai was also questioned on whether the company pays Apple more than Samsung when it comes to revenue sharing. The Google CEO said Apple was paid more.
“It’s like apples and oranges,” Pichai noted and added, “We give revshare not just to Samsung, but to telecom carriers in certain cases who take the product to market, which is not true in Apple’s case,” Pichai said.
