Google is set to host its biggest event of 2023, the company’s annual developer conference, I/O 2023 tomorrow (May 10) at 10:30 pm IST in India. The event will be live-streamed on the tech giant’s video-sharing platform, YouTube. At this event, Google is set to launch the Pixel 7a smartphone, the company’s first foldable phone, the Pixel Fold and its first-ever tablet, the Pixel Tablet.
Google is also expected to introduce the Android 14 operating system along with other software, UI and AI-related advancements during the event. Apart from this, the company may also roll out a new UI design for the edit layout available in the Google Photos app on tablets. Both Pixel Fold and the Pixel Tablet will reportedly have access to this new layout.

Google Photos app editing layout on tablets: How it may change
Google Photos is an app which is available across multiple platforms including iPhones, Android and the web. This service is mostly used to store photos saved in the device in the cloud. However, this app also offers its users some basic editing tools. Moreover, Google One customers even get access to some limited features like Google’s Magic Eraser object removal tools and more.
The app’s current editing layout on tablets looks like a stretched-out version of the one available on smartphones. The tablet version of the editing layout in Google Photos doesn’t show properly, especially in landscape mode. However, the layout is expected to change soon. According to a tweet shared by Google News Telegram’s Nail Sadykov (first spotted by Android Police), the company is preparing a redesigned editing interface for Android tablets that is expected to arrive soon.

Currently, the editing tools in Google Photos on tablets appear under your photo. This layout can waste a lot of space on a larger screen, especially in landscape mode. As per the images shared in the tweet, the landscape tablet editing mode will divide the screen into side-by-side sections with a preview of the image on the left and editing tools to the right. This layout will be more in line with more fully featured third-party image editing tools like Adobe Lightroom. However, the portrait-orientation editing layout seems to remain unaffected.
How will this help users?
Android tablet users won’t have to download a third-party app for some basic editing which can be done on Google Photos which comes pre-installed. This change mainly seems to be targeting tablet users, but will also help Chromebook users who prefer the Google Photos Android app over its web version. Recently, Google also added a new suite of video editing tools to the ChromeOS version of the Photos app.
