Google is reportedly working on a new ‘On-the-Go’ mode for its video conferencing platform—Meet. According to a report by 9to5Google, the feature will make it safer and easier for users to attend video calls while outside. Google has integrated several new features to the Meet interface on Mobile, making it easier for users to facilitate communication, including video and audio calls, screen sharing, real-time captions, and chat messaging.
Google On-the-Go mode: How it works
There are times when it becomes difficult to use the aforementioned features while walking, travelling or other activities. This is where the new ‘On-the-Go’ mode will come in handy. It takes the help of the device’s sensor and automatically gets enabled when the app detects the user is in motion.
Subsequently, Google Meet users can also enable the On-the-Go mode by locating it in the in-call menu by tapping the vertical three-dot menu on the application. Once enabled, the feature automatically turns off the camera while the user is on the call and stops streaming video from other participants in the meeting in order to avoid distraction.
“While it would be ideal for all important video calls to take place while all participants are safely seated (or at least stationary), busy work schedules and a need to exercise often lead to some people joining a meeting while walking. In those instances, Google Meet’s current UI on mobile devices can be distracting and a bit clumsy, potentially making your walk unsafe, as you should be aware of your surroundings,” the report added.
Additionally, Google Meet will appear with a new layout with large buttons, allowing users to mute themselves, switch audio, raise or lower hands or end the call. Google will also let users disable the mode and return to the basic interface when they are stationary.
