The Data Act was proposed by the European Commission in 2022. This legislation aims to oversee the data collected by smart devices, machinery and other consumer goods. The data protection law is designed as a part of a wider legislative endeavour that will restrict the influence of major technology companies in the US. The European Union(EU) has now agreed on the rules of the Data Act.If the EU passes this law, it will become easier for users to move their data between different services, includingiCloud. According to a report by Reuters, the EU has finally reached an agreement regarding the law after seven hours of discussion. EU industry chief Thierry Breton has also shared a tweet to announce the same.

What this law means for users and companies
EU’s Data Act will not only make it easier for users to switch to different data processing service providers but will also adopt protective measures to restrict tech companies that offer cloud services from making unauthorised data transfers. This act will also help in establishing interoperability standards to help different industries to reuse the data.
Moreover, the Data Act will also empower both consumers and companies to decide how the data generated by their related products can be used. This law will also force manufacturers to share data with third parties to offer aftermarket or similar data-oriented services.

How the Data Act can affect Apple
If the EU passes the Data Act, it will require Apple to modify its cloud service, iCloud to offer options for users that will simplify the process to transfer their data to an alternative platform like Google’s cloud services. It is important to note that the Cupertino-based tech giant already offers

Android users to transfer data with the “Move to iOS” app. This app helps Android users to migrate data to a new iPhone or iPad. However, the company currently doesn’t offer a similar tool that can help users to transfer data away from the Apple ecosystem.
