NEW DELHI: Paceman Mitchell Starc on Sunday etched his name in the record books as he became the fastest bowler to pick 50 ODI World Cup wickets during Australia’s opening match against India in Chennai.
The Aussie seamer achieved the feat in 19 innings, surpassing the previous record held by Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga who reached the milestone in 25 innings.

Left-arm quick Starc made a crucial breakthrough in the very first over by dismissing Indian opener Ishan Kishan, who came into the playing XI in place of ill Shubman Gill, for a duck. Kishan attempted a slash at a delivery and ended up getting caught at slip.
Starc has become just the fifth bowler to take 50 wickets in ODI World Cups with countrymate Glenn McGrath (71) sitting right at the top followed by Muttiah Muralitharan (68), Malinga (56) and Wasim Akram (55).
Starc also took fewest balls to get to the landmark, attaining it in 941 balls followed by Malinga (1187), McGrath (1540), Muralitharan (1562) and Akram (1748).
Starc commenced the World Cup with an impressive record of 49 wickets in 18 innings at an average of 14.81.
