Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed team India’s performance in the ODI World Cup 2023. The Rohit Sharma-led team finished off as the runners-up in the marquee tournament after suffering a 6-wicket defeat to Australia in the summit clash.
The hosts had a dream run in the World Cup as they won 10 matches on the trot before facing a heart-breaking defeat against Australia, who were crowned as the ultimate World Champions.
PM Modi, while addressing the nation in his final episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat’ for 2023, praised the Indian cricket team for their performance throughout the tournament. PM Modi reckoned that the team won everyone’s heart with the way they played in the World Cup.
“Indian players won everyone’s heart with their performance in the Cricket World Cup. The victory of our women’s cricket team in the Under-19 T-20 World Cup is very inspiring. The achievements of players in many other sports added to the glory of the country,” Modi said.
The Indian players put up a dominant show throughout their campaign, decimating every opposition coming their way. India were the only team who didn’t face a single defeat in the league stage of the tournament and also defeated New Zealand in the semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were among the top run-scorers in the tournament with 765 and 597 runs respectively in 11 innings. In fact, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul also scored 530 and 452 runs, respectively, showcasing India’s strong batting order. Mohammed Shami, who was benched for the first four games, emerged as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with 24 wickets in 7 matches.
However, India couldn’t cross the final hurdle as Australia turned up as the better side on November 19 at the Nardendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. PM Modi was also present in the stadium during the final match, and he even consoled the Indian players after the loss with a heart-warming speech in the team’s dressing room. The players also thanked the PM for the morale-boosting speech and raising their spirits.
