Russia said 14 people including two children had been killed and 108 injured in “indiscriminate” Ukrainian strikes allegedly including cluster bombs on the Russian provincial capital of Belgorod on Saturday, and vowed to retaliate. Two Vilkha missiles and Czech-made rockets were used in the attack, Russia said.
Belgorod lies about 30km from the border with Ukraine and has been repeatedly struck by what Moscow says is “indiscriminate shelling” by Kyiv’s forces.Newspaper Kommersant cited a source close to the Russian Investigative Committee as saying missiles fired from a multiple rocket launcher in Ukraine’s Kharkiv had hit a skating rink on the central Cathedral Square, a shopping centre and residential buildings.
A Russian attack damaged civilian infrastructure in central Kharkiv on Saturday, leaving eight injured, the regional governor Oleh Synehubov, said. “The occupiers carried out more than six strikes,” Synehubov said in a post on the Telegram messaging app.
No official comment was available from Kyiv, but the Ukrainian news outlet RBC-Ukraine quoted unnamed sources as saying Ukrainian forces had directed fire at military targets in Belgorod in response to the massive Russian bombardment of Ukrainian cities the previous day.
Unverified footage showed debris strewn across the street and smoke billowing from burnt-out cars in the city’s centre, while a large blast can be heard in a dashcam footage posted on social media.
AFP was not able to immediately verify the circumstances of the strike, one of the deadliest on Russian soil since Moscow launched hostilities against Ukraine in February 2022. The Kremlin said President Vladimir Putin had been briefed on the incident, while the Russian defence ministry warned the strike would “not go unpunished”.
The attack came as rescuers in Ukraine continued to search through rubble Saturday after Russian strikes killed 39 people the day before, in one of the fiercest attacks since the early days of the conflict.
Russia’s army said it had “carried out 50 group strikes and one massive strike” on military facilities in Ukraine over the past week, adding “all targets were hit”.
