Intel announced the official launch of Altera, its new standalone field-programmable gate array (FPGA) company. Altera is positioned to capitalise on a total addressable market opportunity of over $55 billion across cloud, network, edge computing, and other segments.
The company also revealed its product roadmap and strategy to secure leadership in the high-growth FPGA space.Altera offers the only FPGA with built-in AI capabilities directly in the fabric. Its solutions are optimised for markets including communications infrastructure, data centres, embedded applications, industrial, automotive, and military.
Altera unveiled several new productions and upcoming products. Agilex 9 FPGAs with integrated data converters now ship for radar and military applications. Agilex 7 F-series and I-series for high-bandwidth data centres, networking, and defence applications deliver 2x better fabric performance per watt versus competitors.
The company also announced the broad availability of Agilex 5, the only FPGA infused with AI in the fabric, delivering 1.6x increased performance per watt over alternative FPGAs. Agilex five targets embedded and edge use cases. Additionally, Altera previewed Agilex 3 FPGAs, bringing leading value and low power to mainstream applications.
“As customers deal with increasingly complex challenges and accelerate time to value, we have an opportunity to reinvigorate the FPGA market,” said Sandra Rivera, Altera’s CEO. “We’re leading with an agile, customer-obsessed approach to deliver programmable solutions and accessible AI across many applications.”
Altera’s expanded portfolio better addresses target market growth while enhancing software and easy-to-use AI capabilities to capitalize on rising AI demand. The company is tackling new AI complexities across industries with its FPGA AI Suite and OpenVINO.
FPGAs provide flexible solutions to integrate AI inferencing and adapt to evolving standards like PCI Express, CXL, Ethernet, and 6G wireless. Altera’s software and IP simplify development to help customers differentiate and accelerate time-to-market and future-proof designs.
