To say that this has been a record breaking IPL season would be an understatement. As many as 8 200 plus totals while chasing alone in this edition.
After 73 matches, now there is just one game left to play – the grand final between the defending champions Gujarat Titans and 4 time champions Chennai Super Kings.
It’s fitting that the two best teams of the league stage are clashing in the summit clash.

Ahead of the big final on Sunday, TimesofIndia.com here takes a look at some of the most mind-boggling statistics from the 16th edition of the IPL:
# A record of most 200-plus totals (36) has been established in this IPL, which is unlikely to be surpassed easily. The tally includes eight totals while chasing successfully – another IPL record – four times by Mumbai Indians, one each by Kolkata, Lucknow, Punjab and Sunrisers.
# Sixteen matches in this edition have witnessed totals of 400-plus – an all-time record. Four times at Mumbai (WS), twice each at Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Mohali & Ahmedabad and once each at Jaipur & Dharamsala.
# Twelve matches this season have witnessed totals of 200-plus from both the teams, outstripping the five in 2022.
# The qualifier 2 at Ahmedabad on May 26, 2023 has witnessed a total of 400-plus (404 for 13) – 233 for three by Gujarat Titans and 171 by Mumbai. The said aggregate is the third highest in the playoffs in the IPL – the highest being 428 for 13 between Punjab Kings (226/6) and Chennai Super Kings (202 for seven) at Wankhede Stadium on May 30, 2014.

# Prior to IPL 2023, just two IPL games had produced hundreds by two batters in the same innings – Virat Kohli (109) & AB de Villiers (129 not out) for RCB vs Gujarat Lions at Bengaluru on May 14, 2016 and Jonny Bairstow (114) & David Warner (100 not out) for Sunrisers Hyderabad vs RCB at Hyderabad
on March 31, 2019.
# Sunrisers Hyderabad vs RCB game played at Hyderabad on May 18,2023 – Heinrich Klaasen (104) and Virat Kohli (100) – provided the first instance when two batters from the opposing sides posted a hundred each in the same IPL game. Three days later, Kohli recorded another hundred (101 not out) vs Gujarat Titans at Bengaluru on May 21 to establish a record for most hundreds (7) by a batter in the IPL apart from registering back to back hundreds for the first time.
# In the aforesaid match, Shubman Gill notched up an unbeaten match-winning knock of 104 off 52 balls to provide the second instance of players from the opposing sides recording a hundred each in the same IPL game.
# Gill’s hundred is the twelfth conceded by Mumbai Indians, including three each in 2022 and 2023 – the most by a team. Four hundreds registered by Rajasthan Royals – one each by Yousuf Pathan, Jos Buttler, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ben Stokes – are the most conceded by Mumbai Indians to a team in the IPL.

# Gill has recorded three hundreds in this IPL – 129 vs Mumbai Indians at Ahmedabad on May 26; 104 not out vs RCB at Bengaluru on May 21 and 101 vs Sunrisers at Ahmedabad on May 15. Just two batters have recorded more centuries in an IPL season – four each by Virat Kohli for RCB in 2016 and Jos Buttler for Rajasthan Royals in 2022.
# Gill’s masterly knock of 129 off 60 balls is his career-best score in Twenty20, surpassing the 126 off 55 balls in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for Punjab vs Karnataka at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on November 1, 2022. Just one Indian player has scored more than Gill in an IPL innings – 132 not out by Lokesh Rahul for Punjab vs RCB at Dubai on September 24 2020.
# At 23 years 260 days old, Gill is the youngest batter to accomplish the feat of posting a century in the playoffs in the IPL. Gill’s innings is the highest by any player in the playoffs, beating Virender Sehwag’s 122 for Punjab vs Chennai at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on May 30, 2014.
