Interestingly, it was on the same day that Cummins had made the record before Starc toppled him. Starc was expected to go big, and he did fetch massive money from KKR, who needed a genuine pacer after releasing Pat Cummins and Lockie Ferguson.
Delhi Capitals (DC) started the bidding before Mumbai Indians (MI) joined in. The bidding war continued for quite some time before both teams backed out at INR 9.60 crore. Thereafter, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Gujarat Titans went berserk to bag the Australian speedster.
When the Knight Riders put in a bid of INR 22.75 crore, Starc went past Cummins as the most expensive player. In the end, the Titans threw in the towel.
Before Starc, the Knight Riders bought in wicketkeeper KS Bharat and left-arm fast bowler Chetan Sakariya.
Starc recently had a stupendous outing in World Cup 2023 after he picked up 16 wickets at an economy rate of 6.06. Back in 2014 and 2015, the pacer played for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and picked up 34 wickets from 27 matches.
In the meantime, Starc getting picked up at a massive price triggered a meme fest. Starc was compared to Iron Man, Tony Stark, after he shattered records in the auction.
Former cricketers were also left awestruck with Starc’s price. “Insanity,” Aakash Chopra wrote.
“What will Hazlewood be feeling now? Starc and Cummins going for over Rs 20 crore and he goes unsold,” one of the fans wrote.
