Jason Gillespie feels that Pat Cummins’ price tag of Rs. 20.5 crore is massively over and feels that the Australian captain is better suited for Test cricket rather than the T20 format.

Cummins made headlines during the IPL 2024 auction. SRH secured Cummins’ services with a staggering bid of Rs 20.5 crore, making him one of the most expensive players in the tournament’s history. SRH had to fend off major interest from Royal Challengers Bangalore.

This acquisition came after Mitchell Starc set a new record, fetching Rs 24.75 crore from Kolkata Knight Riders, underscoring the premium placed on pace bowlers in the league.

Cummins’ impressive cricketing resume includes leading Australia to victory in the ICC World Test Championship in 2023 and the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup in India. His strategic acumen and on-field performances have elevated his value, culminating in the intense bidding war that saw SRH emerge victorious.

While the value of Cummins has been a hot topic of discussion, Gillespie has chimed in saying that it was massively over his real price. Speaking to SEN cricket, the former Aussie pacer said that T20 isn’t the best format for the current Australian Test and ODI skipper.

“I think so,” Gillespie responded when questioned if the deal was a little overs on SEN Sportsday SA.

“Pat’s obviously a quality bowler and a quality leader, we’ve seen that. I just don’t think T20 is his best format.”

Gillespie went on to say that Cummins’ ‘bread and butter’ is Test cricket. The Australian legend went on to say that while Cummins is a good T20 bowler, the price was far too much for him.

“I think he’s a Test bowler, personally. I think Test cricket is his absolute bread and butter.”

“He’s a good T20 bowler, make no mistake. But that’s massive overs for me,” said Gillespie.
