Former Australia head coach Justin Langer has showered praise on the Indian Premier League. The newly appointed head coach of the Lucknow Super Giants said that the IPL is like the Olympic Games and every single game is a spectacle.
The former cricketer was named the head coach of the Lucknow-based side ahead of the 2024 season. LSG moved away from the management team that included Andy Flower and Gautam Gambhir. Langer, who has won the T20 World Cup with Australia and the Big Bash as well revealed that he has had a lot of chat about the tournament with Ricky Ponting and Tom Moody.
“Having sat with Ricky for so long and he talked about his time with the Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals. How much he loves the tournament. And Tom Moody, one of my best friends, he’s been so involved in the IPL and just to hear them talking about it,” Justin Langer said on a video uploaded by the LSG.
“The IPL is like the Olympic Games. It is so big. Every game is a spectacle, it is so well received, it is so well supported, not just at the stadiums, all through India and around the world. To have the opportunity to be a part of that is something I am very, very excited about,” he further added.
Langer took over the Australian side after the infamous Sandpaper Gate in 2018 and earned the trust back of the Australian public. Known as a no-nonsense man, Langer was at the helm of the Australian side till their 2021 T20 World Cup victory. The players fell apart with the coach’s style and Langer was forced to move on despite a riveting 4-0 win against England in the Ashes Down Under.
Since Langer’s departure, Australia have won the WTC 2023 and the ODI World Cup under the leadership of Andrew McDonald.
