NEW DELHI: Former Indian batsman Wasim Jaffer on Sunday voiced his opinion that the Indian Premier League (IPL) should eliminate the ‘Impact Player’ rule, stating that this rule is discouraging all-rounders from bowling, which he sees as a significant concern for the development of Indian cricket.

Jaffer took to social media platform ‘X’, formerly Twitter, to articulate his apprehensions about the adverse impact of the ‘Impact Player’ rule on the bowling skills and overall progress of all-rounders.

“I think IPL needs to take away the impact player rule, as it’s not encouraging the all-rounders to bowl much and lack of ARs and batters not bowling is a major area of concern for Indian cricket. Thoughts? #IPL2024 #iplauction2024,” wrote Jaffer.

According to the ‘Impact Player’ rule, a franchise has the flexibility to substitute a player from the playing eleven with one of the five substitutes named during the toss, providing teams with added depth in either batting or bowling during the course of the match.
Looking ahead to the IPL auction for the upcoming season, it is scheduled to be held on December 19 in Dubai.
