NEW DELHI: Japan‘s Hokkaido island was hit by an earthquake of magnitude of 6.1 on Saturday, local authorities said, which didn’t issue any tsunami warning.
The quake hit off the Nemuro peninsula in the northern island at a depth of 61 kilometres (38 miles), according to Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, at 10:27pm (local time), the temblor’s epicentre was located at a latitude of 42.8 degrees north and longitude 145.1 degrees east, Xinhua news agency reported.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
In two municipalities in Hokkaido, the quake registered as a “lower 5” on Japan’s 7-point intensity scale, which measures ground motion.
That is usually a level where items fall out of shelves and unsecured furniture may move, according to the Japan Meteorological agency.
Though Japan is an earthquake-prone country, the world has experienced quite a few massive earthquakes this year, with Turkey and Syria‘s being the deadliest in decades.
More than 47,000 people were killed and numerous left homeless by the magnitude 7.8 quake in Turkey and Syria on February 6, with both the countries still picking up pieces to rebuild the damaged parts. Turkish authorities say some 173,000 buildings, containing around 534,000 apartments or other units, either collapsed or were severely damaged in the quake and the following strong tremors.
