Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Jio is all set to launch its AirFiber service in India tomorrow (September 19). Mukesh Ambani announced the launch of the service last month at the company’s 46th annual general meeting. “Today, I’m delighted to announce that Jio AirFiber will launch on the auspicious occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi on 19th September, giving us another avenue for customer value and revenue growth in the untapped Indian home segment,” he said while announcing the launch.
Reliance announced Jio AirFiber at last year’s (2022) AGM. Reliance JioFiber will take on Airtel’s Fixed Wireless Access solution Airtel Xstream AirFiber launched this month.
What is Jio AirFiber
Jio AirFiber is positioned as a 5G hotspot designed to rival offerings in the broadband market. Essentially, it serves as a plug-and-play 5G broadband router introduced by Reliance Jio. This implies that users won’t need any wiring or cable installations for JioFiber specifically. To access genuine 5G through Reliance, all subscribers will need is the JioFiber device.

As mentioned above, last month Airtel launched a similar service called Airtel Xstream AirFiber. Airtel Xstream AirFiber represents a Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) solution, offering wireless connectivity within the confines of one’s home. This internet device functions seamlessly on Airtel’s 5G Plus network. It essentially serves as a wireless substitute for traditional broadband services, akin to the concept of wireless 4G dongles. However, it distinguishes itself by offering faster internet speeds, minimal latency, and broader coverage on a larger scale.
The service provider also announced the plans for Airtel Xstream AirFiber. Airtel Xstream AirFiber service is priced at Rs 799 per month, inclusive of an 18 per cent GST. Airtel Xstream Fiber offers a 6-month plan, requiring subscribers to make an upfront payment for the entire 6-month duration. Also, the users will have to pay a security deposit of Rs 2,500 for the device.
Now rumours suggest that the Jio AirFiber will be more affordable as compared to the Airtel Xstream AirFiber. Various online reports suggest that the yet-to-launch Jio AirFiber will be 20% less than the same.
