The next version of macOS —macOS 14 — will be called macOS Sonoma. macOS Sonoma will roll out later this year.
macOS gets an all-new Widgets experience on the Mac and will give users a host of customisation options. Users can place widgets right on the desktop and conveniently access the widget gallery to find the ones they know and love. Widgets blend seamlessly with the wallpaper while users work in apps, so they can stay focused on the task at hand.
New Game mode for Mac
macOS also introduces a new Game mode, Game Mode delivers an optimised gaming experience with smoother and more consistent frame rates, by ensuring games get the highest priority on the CPU and GPU, claims Apple. Game Mode also lowers audio latency with AirPods, and significantly reduces input latency with popular game controllers like those for Xbox and PlayStation by doubling the Bluetooth sampling rate.
macOS Sonoma will also give users a new screensaver experience, which is very similar to the Apple TV one. Screensavers will feature slow-motion videos of various locations worldwide, such as the sweeping skyline of Hong Kong, the sandstone buttes of Monument Valley in Arizona, and the rolling hills of Sonoma in Northern California
Apple has introduced new tools for video calls, including small overlay and large overlay which will allow users to customise. Video calls on macOS also get new video effects and it will work with FaceTime, Zoom, Webex and other third-party apps.
Safari will now lock browser windows in private mode, blocks trackers from loading and removes URL trackers. macOS Sonoma will bring Passkeys to MacBook users. There will also be a new feature called Profiles, which will allow users to create different types of profiles like Work and Personal. Users can sign in to the same site with both work and personal accounts — and quickly switch between them — ensuring a smooth browsing experience
Private Browsing windows also lock when users are not using them, allowing them to keep tabs open even when they step away from their device.
macOS Sonoma will also allow users to create Web Apps for various websites. Apple says that Web apps will make it easier for users to go on their favourite websites.
