Facebook parent Meta has started to lay off employees this week, as a part of the job cuts that it announced in March. It was reported that the company started firing employees in some technical roles. A new report has now claimed that Meta is also planning to cut or relocate its London-based Instagram employees.
Citing a person familiar with the matter, a report by Bloomberg said that Instagram head “Adam Mosseri plans to relocate to the US, along with the staffers who aren’t laid off.” Instagram is owned by Meta.
Why is London important for Meta?
Mosseri moved to the UK from San Francisco to London to boost its business by luring users away from TikTok. The centre reportedly became a centre for growth for the social media company after Mosseri relocated to the country.

According to a previous report by CNBC, London is Meta’s largest engineering hub outside the US and has a dedicated Instagram product team and roles focused on developing services for creators.
Furthermore, Instagram’s London office was its first international presence. It opened in 2013 and has about 100 employees there.
However, the move will only be materialised after the completion of a required consultation period with the UK government.

Job cuts at Meta
Citing a memo, the Bloomberg report also mentioned that as part of that reduction, Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram and Reality Labs — the home of the company’s virtual reality products — will be affected.
In March, the Menlo Park-based company announced that it will eliminate 10,000 positions as a part of an efficiency campaign. At the time, chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg said that cuts will be part of a “year of efficiency” and will be “tough”. He noted that 5,000 vacancies will be left unfilled.
It is also reported that the next round of cuts will be in May. After restructuring, Meta plans to lift hiring and transfer freezes in each group, Zuckerberg had said.
