Microsoft has announced that the company will expand its artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud infrastructure in Spain. For this, the company will be investing $2.1 billion in the next two years, company vice chairman and president Brad Smith said.
“I’m thrilled to announce that we will expand our AI and cloud infrastructure in Spain by $2.1 billion in the next two years,” Smith posted on X.
“Our investment is beyond just building data centres, it’s a testament to our 37-year commitment to Spain, its security, and development and digital transformation of its government, businesses, and people,” he added.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella reposted Brad’s tweet and said that the company will continue partnering with countries to prompt the development of responsible AI.
“Today we announced our plans to expand our investments in Spain, as we continue partnering to promote responsible AI across the public and private sectors,” he said in a post on X.
Meanwhile, Pedro Sánchez, Prime Minister of Spain, said that “the investment of Microsoft in Spain is going to quadruple and will reach EUR 1,950 million.
Microsoft’s investment in Germany
The announcement comes after the company announced an investment of $3.45 billion in Germany focused on AI. Just like Spain, Microsoft’s investment in Germany will also span two years and will facilitate the expansion of its cloud region.
According to the company, the investment would make Microsoft’s cloud computing and AI capabilities more accessible to small and large businesses, including the capacity to develop and apply AI models. The data centres will reportedly be powered entirely by renewable energy.
Smith previously said that with the company’s biggest investment in Germany in the last 40 years, Microsoft aims to double the capacity of its AI and data centre infrastructure in the country and expand its training programmes.
