Qualcomm Technologies has unveiled two new modem chipsets — Qualcomm 212S Modem and the Qualcomm 9205S Modem — with satellite capability. These chipsets are designed to power off-grid industrial applications that require standalone non-terrestrial network (NTN) connectivity or a combination of satellite and terrestrial networks. With these modems, IoT enterprises, developers, ODMs, and OEMs can access real-time information and insights to effectively manage their business projects.
Qualcomm 212S Modem: Details
The Qualcomm 212S Modem is specifically designed for stationary IoT devices, providing better off-grid connectivity through satellite communication. Its ultra-low power consumption makes it suitable for remote, fixed locations, extending the usable life of the devices. The modem can be used for tasks such as gathering telemetry and data from water and gas tanks, meters, and other infrastructure equipment. Additionally, it is well-suited for utility grid monitoring, early fire detection reporting, mining installations, and environmental management.
The Qualcomm 212S is Qualcomm Technologies’ first IoT-NTN-only modem that complies with the 3GPP Release 17 standards for satellite communications. It offers cost efficiency by including only the essential features required for satellite communications.
Qualcomm 9205S Modem: Details
The Qualcomm 9205S Modem, on the other hand, enables IoT devices to seamlessly connect to cellular and satellite networks, ensuring comprehensive coverage. It incorporates GNSS technology to provide accurate location data. The modem is ideal for industrial applications that require always-on, hybrid connectivity, such as tracking shipping containers, agricultural equipment, livestock, and global fleet and freight for supply chain management.
Both the Qualcomm 212S and Qualcomm 9205S modems are compatible with the Qualcomm Aware Platform for NTN connectivity services and device management in remote areas or for business projects that rely on real-time data.
The Qualcomm 212S Modem will be available later this year, while the Qualcomm 9205S Modem is already available.
