NEW DELHI: Australian great Shane Watson recounted a memorable incident involving the then Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The incident took place during CSK’s match against the Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2019 at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.
With just three runs required off the final three deliveries, tensions rose when Rajasthan Royals’ all-rounder Ben Stokes delivered a high full-toss to Mitchell Santner.
Santner managed to play the ball towards long-on, securing a crucial couple of runs.
However, the on-field umpire Ulhas Gandhe deemed the delivery a waist-high no-ball. Surprisingly, this decision was overturned by the leg umpire Bruce Oxenford.
Witnessing this turn of events, Ravindra Jadeja, positioned at the non-striker’s end, engaged in conversation with the umpires.
Frustrated by the unfolding circumstances, Dhoni, who was seated in the dugout, intervened and proceeded to confront the umpires directly on the field.
“I remember the first time that I played at CSK and one of the first things MS Dhoni said to the whole group was ‘Whatever we do, we want to win the FairPlay award but now that we’ve got you Watson (Shane Watson) the chance of us winning that has significantly reduced.’ And then, that great man ended up walking onto the field in one game and I was like well….Maybe not!,” Watson said while recalling the incident on JioCinema.
