NEW DELHI: Reigning Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra and Asian Games silver medallist Kishore Jena are likely to open their crucial athletics season with either Doha or Rabat Diamond Leagues in May next year, TOI has learnt.
While the Doha meet is on May 10, Rabat will host the Diamond League on May 19.
Neeraj and Jena’s participation will mark the start of their competitive preparation for the Paris Olympics 2024.The Diamond League season will kick off in China’s Xiamen on April 20.
It’s been learnt that Neeraj will be participating in fewer tournaments — preferably 3-4 – in the run-up to the Paris Games to keep himself injury-free.
As per the training-cum-competition plan submitted to the office of the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), Neeraj will train at the North-West University in Potchefstroom from December 5, 2023 to February 29, 2024 for a period of 85 days before shifting his base to Turkey.
After participating in athletics meets in Europe, he will directly fly out to Paris a couple of days in advance before returning for the Diamond League Finals in Belgium’s Brussels, scheduled on September 13 and 14.
While Neeraj has planned to train abroad for Paris, rising javelin star Jena – who produced his personal best of 87.54m to win silver at the Hangzhou Asiad – has decided to prepare for the Olympics in India, either at NIS Patiala or Reliance Foundation-run high-performance athletics centre in Bhubaneswar.
“In all likelihood, I will train in India mostly and go for a few competitions abroad before the Paris Olympics. I plan to train in NIS or at the high-performance centre. We are in off-season training, so not doing anything on throwing and on technique. But me and my coach will work on my technique so that everything is fine before the Paris Olympics,” Jena said.
His coach, Simarjeet Singh Malhi, echoed the same sentiments and said they would prefer to train mostly in India.
Similarly, Hangzhou Asiad women’s javelin throw gold medallist, Annu Rani, has planned to train in Germany for the Paris Games and will leave for her exposure trip abroad next month.
