Oneplus: OnePlus and Oppo: We are not exiting these European countries – Times of India

OnePlus and Oppo are set to exit several European countries, so claimed a tipster in a tweet earlier today (March 27). The tweet claimed that Oppo and OnePlus, both owned by BBK Electronics, are planning to shut shop in Europe. The tweet, however, does not mention a reason behind the same. In 2022, OnePlus and Oppo phones were banned in Germany due to a patent dispute with Nokia. Both the companies strongly refute these claims in a media statement.
OnePlus, Oppo exit rumours
Tipster Max Jambor posted on Twitter that both Oppo and OnePlus are pulling out of Europe. “First to leave are Germany, UK, France and Netherlands,” he tweeted. He quickly issued an update saying, “right now only the countries listed will close down. Not Europe entirely.”
A few minutes later, Jambor posted another update saying OnePlus/ Oppo will soon release an official statement. “Right now only Germany, France, UK and Netherlands will close down. For the rest of Europe it is unknown at this point,” he added.

OnePlus and Oppo’s statement on this
Denying these claims, both Oppo and OnePlus said that they have no plans to exit Europe and the UK.
“OnePlus will not exit from Europe and the UK and maintains stable operations in local markets. OnePlus will continue to invest in Europe and provide more innovative products and solutions for its users,” OnePlus global PR manager James Paterson was quoted as saying.
“Oppo is committed to all the existing European markets. We had a great start in 2023 with the successful launches of several products in Europe and have a line-up of upcoming products for the rest of the year. As always, Oppo will continue to provide more innovative products and the best-in-class service for users moving forward,” Tech Advisor quoted a company spokesperson as saying.

What is Nokia, OnePlus and Oppo issue
Last year, it was reported that Oppo and OnePlus have been banned from selling their smartphones in Germany. Both companies were fighting a patent lawsuit against Nokia wherein the Finnish giant had accused both companies of using some of its patented tech, which helps in processing 4G and 5G signals. The company said that neither of the companies had paid for a licence required to use the said tech.
The Chinese companies were dealt a blow. “Two German Courts have ruled that Oppo is using Nokia’s patented technologies in its smartphones and is selling them illegally without a licence. Nokia has also been found to have acted fairly. The easiest way for Oppo to resolve this matter is to renew its licence on fair terms,” Nokia told The Times of India-GadgetsNow at that time.
OnePlus told The Times of India-GadgetsNow that it complies with the laws and regulations in markets it operates.
“OnePlus diligently complies with the laws and regulations in all markets where we operate. As a leading technology brand, we recognize the importance of intellectual property in driving innovation and highly value fair access to essential patents. Nokia’s demand for an unreasonably high fee is detrimental to this effect. We are actively working with the relevant parties to resolve the ongoing legal matter. While sales and marketing of the relevant products are on hold, OnePlus remains committed to the German market and will continue our operations,” the company said.

Meanwhile, OnePlus users in Germany can continue to enjoy our products and related services such as regular software updates and our after-sales service as before,” it added.
Oppo confirmed that it had suspended the sale of its smartphones in the country.
