Cricket Australia (CA) issued an apology after a racial slur appeared on their scorecard during Pakistan’s four-day warm-up match against the Prime Minister’s XI at the Manuka Oval in Canberra.
On Day 1 of the match, the ticker showed ‘P**I’ instead of PAK, and it immediately grabbed eyeballs. ‘P**I’ is a derogatory term used against people of South Asian descent.
Australian journalist Danny Saeed pointed out the same, after which Cricket Australia made the changes to the scorecard.
“The graphic was an automatic feed from a data provider which had not been used previously for a Pakistan game. This was obviously regrettable, and the error we corrected manually as soon as it came to light,” CA wrote in a statement according to the Australian journalist.
As far as the game is concerned, Shan Masood made a dream start as the Pakistan skipper after he racked up his third double hundred in first-class cricket. He stayed not out on 201 runs off 298 balls with 14 fours and a six as Pakistan scored 391 for the loss of nine wickets in 116.2 overs.
Babar Azam and Sarfaraz Ahmed scored 40 and 41 respectively. Abdullah Shafique, who had become the first Pakistani batter to score a hundred on his World Cup debut back in October, scored 38 runs off 76 balls with one four.
Jordan Buckingham was the star performer for the PMXI after he picked up the crucial wickets of Imam-ul-Haq, Babar, Sarfaraz, Aamer Jamal and Mir Hamza. Mark Steketee, Nathan McAndrew and Todd Murphy picked up one wicket apiece.
